Choosing the Right Deepflow Cast Iron Gutter Size

Hargreaves Deepflow is available in 100 x 75mm (4" x 3") and 125 x 75mm (5" x 3").

Both of these have the same deep half round design, but the larger 125mm provides you with extra capacity and a more substantial appearance on the roofline. This can certainly make sense for larger properties and commercial buildings with long roof lines.

The smaller 100 x 75mm profile is slightly more aesthetically pleasing and may work well for you if you are looking for a deeper gutter but do not want it to look too bulky.

When replacing an existing gutter system, it is important to measure both the width and depth rather than just the width alone. Deepflow guttering depends upon both measurements, so taking just one could mean ordering the wrong type of guttering.

If you are unsure, our Cast Iron Guttering Sizes Explained guide is a useful place to start.

100 x 75mm or 125 x 75mm?

Generally speaking, the choice will be determined by the size of the roof and the amount of water that needs to be dealt with. In cases where the roof area is reasonable but you need a little extra depth than the half round profile, the 100 x 75mm Deepflow would be the neater choice.

However, in cases where the roof area is large or where there are longer elevations, the 125 x 75mm Deepflow would be the better choice. That said, we would not make our choice based purely on aesthetics.

The roof area, number of outlets, gutter fall and downpipe locations will all determine the final configuration. If you can provide us with plans or roof measurements, we can assist you in determining the appropriate gutter and downpipe sizes prior to ordering.

Why Choose Deepflow Instead of Standard Half Round?

The key lies in the name itself!

Deepflow guttering features a deeper profile than the conventional half round gutter, which provides additional space for holding rainwater along the actual run.

It can come handy for:

  • Large residential roof conversions
  • Commercial buildings
  • Buildings of heritage that feature long gutter runs
  • Roofing systems with limited outlet points
  • Places where conventional guttering might prove to be under-sized

It also possesses a slightly more "solid" appearance compared to the conventional half round gutter, which in turn, makes it an excellent choice for larger buildings.

If your project doesn’t need the extra depth, look at our Plain Half Round Cast Iron Guttering instead. That range gives you a more traditional shallow half round profile in several sizes.

Cast Iron Rainwater Frequently Asked Questions

How Quick Is Delivery?

Popular painted black cast iron guttering sizes are typically available for next working day delivery across the UK when ordered before 11:30am, subject to stock availability.

Primed systems are stocked across selected sizes, while custom RAL powder coated cast iron guttering is usually supplied within 7–10 working days.

What Makes Apex Heritage Different From Cheaper Cast Iron Systems?

We think the consistency is noticeably better. Apex Heritage cast iron guttering is manufactured using traditional sand cast methods alongside modern quality control standards, giving cleaner alignment, more reliable fitment, and a far better painted finish compared with lower-grade imported systems.

What Size Cast Iron Guttering Do I Need?

For most standard residential properties, 115mm (4½”) Half Round cast iron guttering is the most commonly used size. Larger roofs, commercial buildings, or areas with heavier rainfall may benefit from 125mm or 150mm systems. If you're replacing existing guttering, matching the current profile and outlet size is usually the safest option.

Is Cast Iron Better Than Cast Iron Effect Plastic Guttering?

They’re completely different products really. Plastic cast iron effect guttering is lighter and cheaper upfront, but genuine cast iron is significantly stronger, longer lasting, and far more authentic visually. Proper cast iron guttering can last well over 40 years and suits heritage buildings far better than imitation systems.

Are Custom Colours Available?

Yes. Custom RAL colour cast iron guttering is available for heritage and architectural projects requiring a more bespoke finish. These systems are professionally powder coated in the UK with typical lead times of 7–10 working days.

How Heavy Is Cast Iron Guttering?

Cast iron guttering is substantially heavier than plastic or aluminium systems, which is part of why it lasts so long. Proper bracket spacing and secure fixing into suitable surfaces is important for long-term performance.

How Long Does Cast Iron Guttering Last?

High quality cast iron guttering systems regularly achieve service lives exceeding 40 years when correctly installed and maintained. Many older cast iron systems remain in use well beyond that.

What Happens If I Order The Wrong Parts?

Returns are accepted within 30 days on standard stock items. Orders returned within 14 days are generally accepted without a restocking charge, while returns after 14 days may be subject to a handling fee depending on the products ordered.

Do You Offer Trade Support?

Yes. We work closely with builders, roofing contractors, installers, architects, and developers needing specification support, bulk pricing, and reliable lead times across larger cast iron rainwater projects.
