Buying Beaded Cast Iron Guttering – Dimensions and Fittings

Beaded Half Round cast iron guttering is a beautiful addition to traditional houses, but there is a little bit more to consider when purchasing it – especially when replacing an existing cast iron gutter system.

There are two sizes available in our Alumasc Apex Heritage range of Beaded Cast Iron Guttering – 4.5" and 5". There are matching brackets, outlets, stop ends, angles and unions to go with these sizes. Let's have a look at what you should know before making your order.

4.5" (115mm) and 5" (125mm) Beaded Cast Iron Guttering

Both of these gutter systems have the same classic curved profile with the raised decorative bead along the edge. The main difference between them is their overall dimensions and capacity.

The 4.5" gutter system is often found on traditional residential properties, particularly where it matches the original gutter profile. The 5" profile might be better suited for larger roof areas, depending on the drainage requirements.

Alumasc refers to these systems as BG45 and BG50. Sometimes you might come across descriptions of the smaller profile as 113mm in engineering terms and 115mm in the product listings. These sizes refer to the same nominal 4.5" profile.

When replacing existing guttering, we recommend that you match the original size and profile. When installing a new system, the capacity of the gutter should be calculated based on the roof area, intensity of rainfall and the number of outlets, not on appearance.

What Fittings Are Needed for Beaded Cast Iron Guttering?

Purchasing the lengths of the guttering is just a small part of the process. You will also need various fittings to connect all these pieces and direct water into the downpipes. In most cases, you will need gutter unions, gutter brackets, outlets and gutter stop ends. If your property has corners, you will also need the corresponding 90° or 135° gutter angles.

One thing that should be taken into account is the outlet diameter. In the Beaded Half Round range there are outlets for 65mm and 75mm round cast iron downpipes. The one that will be suitable for your installation depends on the diameter of the proposed downpipe system.

Bear in mind that the fittings from the Plain Half Round gutter system cannot be used with Beaded Half Round guttering. As the profiles differ, we recommend that you purchase the corresponding fittings from the Alumasc Apex range.

How Much Beaded Cast Iron Guttering Do I Need?

Our Beaded Half Round cast iron guttering is supplied in 1.83m (6ft) lengths.

You should start by measuring the roofline in metres and separating all straight sections. Estimate the number of gutter sections by dividing the total length by 1.83. So, a straight 5 m gutter run will require around three sections of 1.83 m length. Three full lengths give you 5.49 m of guttering before any cutting or joint allowances.

Please take into consideration the actual jointing pattern, presence of corners and any waste.

Cast iron guttering is very heavy and requires strong support. Please use the correct brackets and bracket spacing according to Alumasc's installation instructions, along with appropriate fixings for the building.

Replacing Existing Beaded Cast Iron Guttering

While renovating your old property, take some measurements before removing the old gutters. Measure the gutter profile, overall width and depth, and the positions of the existing outlets. It's common to encounter different gutter profiles on neighbouring properties, especially Victorian and Edwardian buildings that have been repaired over the years.
